KIOSK_GINKGO BIOWORKS

This check in kiosk is a feature piece for Ginkgo Biowork’s new lab space in Boston’s Seaport. It acts not only as a check-in kiosk but as a centerpiece to the “Cabinets of Curiosity”; a showcase of literature, art, and artifacts. It’s soft lights begin to glow, inviting guests off the elevator and into the lobby. A mirror slowly fades to reveal an improbably deep glowing box of slime and fungus. We wanted the guest check-in to be an experience that materializes Ginkgo Bioworks. We used Slime Mold as inspiration for the kiosk, interpreting their forms by 3D laser etching the textures and patterns into acrylic panels. The result was four layers of panels behind a two way mirror that, when light was introduced, created the illusion that the patterns continued infinitely. A microcontroller connected to a motion sensor and switch determines hue and brightness.
